Summer Vocabulary Building

If your child has a lot of free time during the summer, don't let it go to waste. Help them build a stronger vocabulary this summer with these fun and educational activities.

Make Time for Reading

Reading is a great way for anyone to develop a larger and stronger vocabulary. Help your child do exactly this by making daily reading time. If your child is young and doesn't yet know how to read, use this time to read to them. Older children can benefit from silent reading or from reading aloud to you or their siblings. No matter what way they choose to read, just be sure they read daily.

Keep a Summer Journal

A summer journal is a great way to get your child to practice using new vocabulary words. Encourage them to use new words they learn from their reading or give them a word of the day or week they can practice using in their writing. Encourage them to make this journal their very own so that their writing time is more fun.

Play Word Games

Word games are a great way to get your child to practice academics without it feeling like homework. Boardgames like Scrabble can be played with the entire family, helping everyone increase their vocabulary. You can also come up with a word of the week, post it on the refrigerator, and have a friendly competition between family members to see who can use it correctly in conversation during the week.
