Learning to Balance School and Extracurricular Activities

Getting your child involved in extracurricular activities is a great way for them to grow and learn outside of the classroom. However, balancing extracurricular activities with school can prove to be a challenge for some children. The Tutoring Center in Broken Arrow has some tips to help your child do their best in their academic activities and extracurricular activities.

Manage Your Time Wisely

One of the most important things your child can learn from balancing extracurriculars and school is time management. Learning how to manage their time wisely will be a useful skill they can perfect over time and use forever. Help your child create a calendar with all their planned activities and decide how to use their free time to prepare. Looking ahead at the upcoming week will help them visualize the time they have for homework, events and practices.

Set Priorities

While extracurricular activities provide great benefits and look great on college applications, don't lose sight of the importance of academics. If you notice your child is dedicating a lot of time to their extracurricular activities but having difficulties keeping up with school, help them adjust their focus. Remind your child that their academics shouldn't suffer as a result of their extracurricular success. Have your child spend at least the same amount of time on homework and studying as they do preparing for other activities.

Encourage Your Child to Excel

Just like children can lose interest in school, they can also lose interest in extracurricular activities. The best way to encourage your child to excel in these activities is by letting them choose what they want to be involved in. Avoid pushing your child into an activity they aren't interested in and instead let them explore their options. Being stuck in an activity they don't enjoy can affect their mood, concentration and interfere with schoolwork. Even if it's frustrating to see your child try different activities, encourage them to find something that makes them happy and excited to learn.
